Field & Oak Wilderness Explorers
A Hooverarium Program
Where Empathy Blooms & Curiosity Roams.
About Field & Oak Wilderness Explorers
Field & Oak Wilderness Explorers is a seasonal, nature-based program created to nurture curiosity, empathy, and connection through meaningful time outdoors. Set on a private property in the Sierra foothills and offered through Hooverarium, the program invites children and families to explore the living world with care, wonder, and intention. Our days are shaped by the land itself—by weather, wildlife, plants, and the questions that arise naturally when children are given time to notice.
Programs run in 10-week semesters, providing a steady rhythm that allows learning to unfold slowly and authentically. This extended format supports relationship-building, repeat observation, and a deeper sense of place. Children return to the same land week after week, noticing seasonal changes, tracking familiar plants and animals, and growing more confident in their surroundings over time.
Each semester centers on seasonal ecology, with explorations that may include native plants, animal tracking, reptiles and amphibians, soil and decomposition, weather patterns, and food webs. Learning happens through guided exploration, storytelling, creative expression, movement, and quiet observation. Rather than following a rigid curriculum, facilitators guide & respond to group interests and natural events, weaving science, stewardship, and environmental awareness into each gathering.
Field & Oak Wilderness Explorers serves children of multiple ages with developmentally appropriate approaches. Younger children participate alongside their parents or caregivers in a parent-immersive program, emphasizing sensory play, movement, and early nature awareness. Older children are supported in building independence, cooperation, and responsibility while remaining closely supervised. Parents remain on site, helping create a shared community of care and safety.
At its heart, Field & Oak Wilderness Explorers is about relationship—relationship to land, to community, and to self. By giving children the space to explore, ask questions, and engage with the natural world at their own pace, we hope to cultivate a lifelong sense of respect, resilience, and curiosity. Here, empathy blooms and curiosity roams.
Our Philosophy
At Field & Oak Wilderness Explorers, we believe children learn best through relationship—with the land, with one another, and with their own sense of curiosity. We value slow learning, repeated experiences, and meaningful time outdoors. Our approach is child-led, place-based, and rooted in respect for the natural world, recognizing that empathy grows through direct experience. By giving children space to explore, notice, and wonder, we support confidence, resilience, and a lifelong connection to nature.
